Latinos are the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population, and among the most diverse – accounting for one-sixth of all Americans and tracing their origins to more than 20 countries. They are also a rising force in American politics. Yet, across the American media landscape, from the broadcast airwaves to cable television and Hollywood film, the reality and richness of the Latino experience is virtually nowhere to be found. Come participate in this enlightening conversation as panelists explore Latinos and media stereotypes in the industry.

Panelists: 

Mandalit del Barco is an arts correspondent with NPR News. She has reported and produced radio stories and photographed everything from street gangs to Hollywood, police and prisons, marijuana, immigration, natural disasters and urban street culture. From her home base in Los Angeles every year, she covers the Oscars and Grammy Awards for NPR. Previously, she was on the staff of WNYC before starting at NPR in Los Angeles, and reported for The Miami Herald and The Village Voice. Mandalit has won awards for her journalism, her stories have appeared in books about Latino authors, and she contributed to an anthology on Hip Hop. She has a master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia University.

Natalia Almada is a documentary filmmaker. Her film, El Velador, premiered at New Directors/New Films and the Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 2011, and El General received the Sundance Documentary Directing Award in 2009. Natalia’s credits include All Water Has a Perfect Memory, a short film that received international recognition, and Al Otro Lado, her award-winning debut feature documentary about immigration, drug trafficking and corrido music. Her films have screened at Documenta13, The Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim Museum and the 2008 Whitney Biennial. She has received the MacArthur, Guggenheim, USA Artists and Alpert Awards, and was the 2007 NALIP Estela Award recipient. 

Yancey Arias is an actor. He is best known for his break out performance as Miguel Cadenas in the NBC mini-series “Kingpin”. He recently starred in the film Chavez, directed by Diego Luna and produced by John Malcovich, which is due out in late 2013. He also starred in the films America, Undocumented, American Family, and co-starred in Walkout, in which he received a best supporting actor nomination. Yancey’s television credits include “Thief”, “Knight Rider”, “Revenge”, “Blue Bloods”, “Elementary” and “Hawaii Five-O”. He also In 2010, Yancey directed, produced and wrote his award winning short film Baby. Yancey’s theater credits include Miss Saigon and The Wild Party. 

Richard Montoya is a storyteller. The son of a Chicano poet and dedicated teacher, Richard learned the value of language early on. He is the co-founder of the legendary performance trio Culture Clash, and is a solo playwright with productions currently playing the U.S. Richard wrote and directed the film, Water & Power, which is based on his landmark play of the same name originally produced by the Mark Taper Forum, and winner of the Los Angeles Theatre Critics’ Circle and Ovation Awards for Best New Play. A Sundance Institute writer and director alumni, Richard was a staff writer on the first season of “Southland” for John Wells. He writes every day and his books of plays are banned in Arizona by the Attorney General there.
